Affordable housing for single moms is available through the Housing Choice Vouchers program, run by public housing agencies (PHA) that receive funds from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. This program is offered by the government to assist very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to obtain decent, safe, and sanitary housing at affordable rates. This program is not limited to public housing, and you have the option of even entering your current place of residence, if the owner agrees.

If, however, you require new housing, it is your responsibility to locate a suitable home that meets the minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the housing agency, and whose owner agrees to rent under the program. The landlord will be paid directly by the housing agency on your behalf, and you will have to pay the difference left after the subsidy has been deducted from the actual rent. In some cases you may use your voucher to buy a modest home, but you must first get authorization from the housing agency.

As with most other housing subsidy programs, your eligibility is determined according to your gross annual income, and generally should not exceed 50% of the average income for the area you wish to live in. By law, 75% of housing vouchers must go to applicants who have incomes that are 30% or below the average for that area.

During your application the housing agency will require information pertaining to your income, assets, and family composition. They will verify this information for accuracy to determine whether you qualify or not, as well as the amount you can receive.

The Housing Choice Vouchers program is invaluable in providing housing for single moms, because it also takes into account that your needs change in time, be it due to changes in the size of your family, job change, or any other reason. It is designed to allow you to move without losing your housing assistance, but you must notify the housing agency ahead of time so that the existing lease can be terminated, and alternate acceptable housing found.

The demand for subsidized private housing and public housing has steadily increased, therefore there are very long waiting lists, so you shouldn’t wait too long before applying. You should also inquire as to whether the housing agency you are applying with also administers public housing, because if they do, you can request to be placed on that waiting list as well.

There are also situations in which the housing agency may show preference to one family or another, generally according to special circumstances such as in the case of single parent families. Even if you have to wait a while, at least you have a viable solution open to you.

Affordable housing for single moms is available all over the US, all you have to do is contact your local public housing agency to find out more details and what options are available in the area. You would like to live. If you want to see, if you’re eligible for the area you wish to live in, the income limits can also be found online.
